Raising a Joyful Sound
The Mount hosted musicians from Benedictine College (BC) on April 14 and 20, 2024, as liturgical music students Mary Catherine Karpilo and Gerard Remmes planned music for vespers as their capstone projects. Gerard composed an invitatory for the Fourth Sunday of Easter, and both he and Mary Catherine directed fellow students in singing a prelude and postlude at the vesper services.
On May 10, the BC Chamber Singers performed a concert in St. Scholastica Chapel for the sisters and for family members of students who were graduating. Dr. Timothy Tharaldson conducted the choir, which performed a program of all a cappella pieces. “The Miracle of St. Scholastica,” which was written by Dr. Tharaldson for the occasion of the 160th anniversary of Mount St. Scholastica, was one of the highlights of the program.
Mount sisters and guests enjoyed a program by concert pianist Lio Kuok-Wai in St. Scholastica Chapel on May 12. Kuok-Wai will be the artist in residence at BC in the fall of 2024, where he will teach a master class and perform concerts. A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, Kuok- Wai has won numerous awards and has performed with orchestras that include the China Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Camerata Salzburg, Kansas City Symphony Orchestra, and Houston Symphony Orchestra.
