What is it?
Spiritual direction can be a bit of a mysterious term.
A single, standard definition can often fall short, but one of the key points to recognize is that your relationship with God is really at the heart of it.
It may be helpful to think of spiritual direction as a journey of self-discovery and a deepening of spiritual understanding, witnessed by a spiritual director who serves as a supportive and encouraging companion.
What is a spiritual director and what do they do?
A spiritual director is someone trained to help you come to a deeper understanding of your relationship with God. They will also help you to see how that relationship is present in your life. You can think of a spiritual director as someone who can help you gain insight, but their role is not one of a couselor or a psychologist.
At its core, the role of a spiritual director is one of deep listening, with the sincere intention of offering support, particularly in matters of the spirit.
Some common reasons people seek spiritual direction
- life is feeling particularly complex and overwhelming
- big life changes are coming/taking place
- seeking a new or deeper experience/relationship with God
- feeling lost or confused in the current stage of life
- discernment in a decision that needs to be made
Deeper Understanding
Spiritual direction is a process that intrinsically trusts that God can be found in the unique inner wisdom of each person—the unique inner wisdom within you. The demands and experiences of life can easily bury or hide our deep connection with God, but the fact remains, it is always there. Spiritual direction can help you work to rediscover that connection if its been “lost” or to refresh, illuminate, and strengthen that connection you already enjoy.
