Seeking Christ: through life as a Benedictine Oblate

Oblates of 2024
Oblates 2024

Are you feeling a push to become more involved in your spiritual life but do not know where to start? Our oblate program offers a spiritual home where lay women and men are able to deepen their relationship with God through living the Benedictine values. If you have an interest in becoming an oblate, let us know by filling out our oblate inquiry form below.

What is an oblate?

Oblates are Christian women and men who seek God in partnership with a particular Benedictine monastery. Oblates bear witness to the teachings of Jesus and of St. Benedict by living out the Benedictine values of prayer, hospitality, stability, humility, stewardship, and simplicity in their daily lives.

What do oblates of Mount St. Scholastica do?

  • Study the Rule of St. Benedict
  • Make room for prayer and service in their daily life
  • Support one another through meetings and other communal gatherings while bringing Christ and the spirit of St. Benedict into their families, places of work, and social circles
  • Unite with the sisters through their prayer, regular visits to the Mount as able, and other expressions of support

Why become an oblate?

  • To find a spiritual home that provides support, wisdom, and companionship with others who are seeking to know and serve God
  • To deepen your relationship with God, yourself, others, and creation through formation in Benedictine spirituality
  • To receive strength and inspiration from your oblate community and from the sisters
  • To enrich the lives of others by carrying monastic values into the world

How do you become an oblate of the Mount?

First, you establish a connection, or deepen your existing relationship, with the Mount community. Oblates have a personal association with a specific monastery to which they feel called.

You then begin to attend meetings in Kansas City, St. Joseph, Atchison, or Topeka (or via Zoom) and spend one to two years in a formation program. During this time, you will explore the traditions of Benedictine life and study the Rule.

A candidate may then make a lifelong promise of oblation to seek God as an oblate of Mount St. Scholastica.
