Fellin Lecturer Affirms Teaching of Benedictine Principles

Sister Susan’s lecture was an affirmation of the Mount’s ministry of education that started in 1863 when the founding sisters of Mount St. Scholastica opened their first school within days of arriving in Atchison.

In conjunction with the 160th anniversary celebration of Mount St. Scholastica, Sister Susan Quaintance, OSB, presented the Mary L. Fellin Lecture at Benedictine College on September 10, 2023.

The title of Sister Susan’s lecture was “Holy Conversation: Is That the Crux of Benedictine Education?” Sister Susan, who is currently subprioress of the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago, spent over two decades teaching English and theology at St. Scholastica Academy in Chicago, Illinois. She asked former students how the Benedictine principles they learned have helped them meet life’s challenges and reported on the value her former students found in the practice of hospitality, listening, and humility.

A financial gift of the Fellin family to honor the life and service of Mary L. Fellin led to the creation of the lecture series featuring academic presentations by women. The first presentation by Sister Helen Prejean, CSJ, was made in 1997; the lecture by Sister Susan was the 23rd in the series.
