The New Year Stretches Out Before Us

Behold, I make all things new.

I know I’ve written this before, but I love the start of a new year. During the many years I spent as a teacher and principal in schools, I was always glad for both the start of school in August and the first days of January. I think the opportunities to begin again are gifts. Somewhere and some time ago, I came across a poem by an unknown author which is often quoted, adapted it and wrote down my own version. It perfectly captures my fascination with the start of a new year.

Behold, I make all things new.

“I Am the New Year”
I am the New Year. I am a blank, unspoiled page in your book of life.
I am your next chance to right any wrongs.
I am your opportunity to practice all you have learned about life thus far.
All that you sought and didn’t find is hidden in me, waiting for you to seek and discover.
All the good that you wanted to do,
All that you dreamed but didn’t dare to do,
All that you hoped for but didn’t obtain,
All the faith you claimed but did not yet have,
All these are still waiting in this new year.
I am your opportunity to meet again the one who said, “Behold, I make all things new.”

May your new year be especially blessed and may it bring you back to Sophia. Be assured of our prayers.
