Declaration of Commitment

As our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) has invited congregations to reflect on the values that have guided their ministries throughout the history of our country. On June 25, at 12 pm EDT, LCWR will present a Declaration of Commitment to members of Congress, affirming the responsibility of women religious to respond to the needs of our time and work for the common good.

As Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica, we are honored to join this effort. We believe every person is created in the image of God and is worthy of respect and care. We have been called to protect and uphold human life, care for those who are vulnerable, welcome the stranger, and seek justice.

In a time of division and uncertainty, we believe it is important to affirm the dignity of all people and our shared responsibility for the common good. Through signing this declaration, we renew our commitment to Benedictine values and to building a society where all can flourish with hope, compassion, and faith.

Please join us in prayer:

Prayers of Heart and Commitment
(Prayer from LCWR)

We bring into our presence the most vulnerable, unseen, alone and “othered” as we ask our God of compassion, mercy and love to awaken our hearts that instead of looking away, we respond.

Earth, in need of healing with decisive action to restore what has been destroyed…
Open Our Hearts

Those who are detained and separated without due process or just representation…
Open Our Hearts

All who depart their homeland this day escaping fear and seeking safety…
Open Our Hearts

Women, children and men whose human dignity is disrespected this day….
Open Our Hearts

Our complicity in the systemic racism that continues to bring harm
Open Our Hearts

Responsibility for exercising our right to vote and advocating for the same for others
Open Our Hearts

With open hearts, we commit ourselves to making choices to alleviate poverty, stop violence in all its forms and be those who bring healing, hope and repair as we witness to Gospel love.

Amen.
