The Feast of St. Charles Borromeo

November 4, 2024 All day

St. Charles Borromeo

(1538-1584) St. Charles Borromeo is renowned for reforming priestly formation and ministry. Born into a distinguished background during a time of rampant nepotism, at the age of twenty-two, Borromeo was made a cardinal by his uncle, Pope Pius IV. Following the Council of Trent in which he played a prominent role in producing the Catechism, Borromeo chose to be ordained instead of pursuing a career and position as head of the family.

Borromeo was consecrated as bishop of Milan in 1563. During his time there, he tirelessly worked towards reform for clergy renewal and seminary formation, developed a catechetical approach for children, and insisted on proper celebration of the liturgy. During a famine, he fed over three thousand people from his diocese and in a plague outbreak, he was an example of Christian charity as he organized care for the sick, buried the dead, and attended to corporal works of mercy.

St. Charles Borromeo, pray for us!

“Be sure that you first preach by the way you live. If you do not, people will notice that you say one thing, but live otherwise, and your words will bring only cynical laughter and a derisive shake of the head.”
