Sister Susan Holmes

I was born at home in Mission, Ks but grew up in Kansas City, Mo.  The Mercy Sisters nurtured the seed of a vocation in me during grade school, but I did not feel attracted to them. For high school, I chose Lillis because it was co-ed.  The Benedictine sisters took the freshmen girls to Mount St. Scholastica for a day.  I felt so at home I knew that was where I wanted to enter.  It turned out that my maternal grandmother (a convert) had been taught by the Benedictine Sisters in Clyde, Mo and passed on to my mother (and my family) some convent prayers and practices.  I have served as religious education coordinator, pastoral minister, and as a hospice chaplain and bereavement counselor.  I have an MA in Pastoral Ministry.  Hospice ministry has been the love of my life.  I serve the small hospice sponsored by Amberwell Hospital here in Atchison as a chaplain.  I now also serve as a spiritual director (certification from our Souljourners Program) and offer individual and group bereavement through Sophia Center.  I love swimming, boating, reading, watching movies and being in nature.
