Benedictine Volunteers

The volunteer live-in program gives men and women the opportunity to participate in Benedictine community, prayer and ministry by living, praying and working with the Sisters at Mount St. Scholastica.

We invite you to consider being a live-in volunteer if you…

  • Desire to enter into prayer, communal life, and the mission of the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica
  • Are over 21 and in good health
  • Have no dependents
  • Are financially independent (we provide room/board and negotiate a stipend)
  • Can adapt to a communal life style

There is a formal application process. Length of service is ordinarily 1 year, renewable for 1 year. There is a 4-6 month probationary period following acceptance into the program.

Volunteer opportunities without the live-in component are also available through Keeler Women’s Center in Kansas City, Sophia Center Spirituality Center and the monastery.

When a recent volunteer was asked what she gleaned from her time at the Mount, she said that her values became crystallized. She spoke of knowing "what is important in life" and "what not to worry about." She appreciated seeing how the sisters work and live together. She observed that, unlike most people, the sisters approach difficulties and challenges with a spirit of reconciliation. The Benedictine value of "welcoming everyone as Christ" is an attitude that she will take with her from her year of sharing life with us.
