SUMMARY:Contemplative Nature Journaling
DESCRIPTION:On-site \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis retreat invites you to explore nature journaling and lectio divina in nature as ways of encountering God’s presence in creation. You will learn the basics of keeping a nature journal\, practicing “intentional curiosity” to notice closely\, ask questions\, and record both what you see and what stirs within. \n\n\n\nThrough simple sketches\, writing\, and contemplative prayer\, you will begin a personal journal that brings together the outer world and your inner life. Our time together will include observation\, journaling\, lectio divina in nature\, and shared reflection. No artistic or scientific background is needed\, only a desire to engage creation with wonder. \n\n\n\n*Cost includes private room and meals \n\n\n\nPlease register by May 1. \n\n\n\nAfter receiving your registration\, you will receive a confirmation email from us which will be your invoice. We never want our retreat costs to be prohibitive to anyone who wants to attend our programs\, so we are pleased to offer scholarships. Fill out our simple scholarship request form now! \n\n\n\nRead about our cancellation and refund policy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSr. Elizabeth Carrillo\n\n\n\nSr. Elizabeth has an M.A. degree in Religion and the Environment from the University of the South School of Theology in Sewanee\, Tennessee. She is a board and staff member of the Center for Deep Green Faith\, which provides offerings that blend eco-theology with eco-spirituality grounded in the Christian tradition. She is an alumna of the Center’s Contemplation and Care for Creation Certificate Program and provides workshops and retreats at Sophia Center and elsewhere. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDonna Coleman\n\n\n\nDonna grew up near Weston\, Missouri\, and earned her Bachelor’s degree in English from Benedictine College\, where she also studied Sociology and Philosophy. She later received certification in Graphic Design from the Kansas City Art Institute and has spent extended time working and volunteering in Belize\, Japan\, and Madagascar. Donna enjoys time outdoors\, creating art\, and putting her creative skills to work for Sophia. You’ll most often see her online\, supporting our Zoom presenters and participants. She lives in her childhood home with her husband\, Jesse.

SUMMARY:A Special Offering for Benedictine Oblates: Yearning for Life–The Timeless Wisdom of The Rule in Troubled Times
DESCRIPTION:Zoom \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn-site \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHybrid (Zoom/On-site) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease note this event is only available to Benedictine oblates and inquirers. \n\n\n\nWho of us is not affected by “the times.” Whether we are struggling with the challenges of the now\, or worried about the uncertainty of the future\, Benedict invites us to choose a path of promise. As he asks in the Prologue of his Rule\, “is there anyone here who yearns for life and desires to see good days?” \n\n\n\nA resounding “yes!” \n\n\n\nThis year’s Oblate Institute will feature Judith Valente\, writer\, international speaker and Mount oblate who will lead us on a path to find these good days.  We will travel on a journey that studies Benedict’s tools for good works\, use of the psalms and a yearning to bring good zeal into our lives. \n\n\n\nAs a hybrid experience\, there are a number of attendance options for you. \n\n\n\n\nIn person attendance with single room – $450\n\n\n\nIn person attendance with shared room – $400\n\n\n\nCommuter (presentation\, social\, and meals included\, but no room) – $300\n\n\n\nZoom – $100\n\n\n\n\nFor those attending in-person\, you also have the option to arrive a day early (add $55)\, stay a day late (add $55)\, or both (add $110). \n\n\n\nSpace is limited—please register early. \n\n\n\nAfter receiving your registration\, you will receive a confirmation email from us which will be your invoice. \n\n\n\n*Read about our cancellation and refund policy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJudith Valente\n\n\n\nJudith Valente is a journalist\, poet and the author of six spirituality titles and three poetry collections. She is an oblate of Mount St. Scholastica Monastery in Atchison\, KS\, which is the subject of her award-winning memoir\, Atchison Blue: A Search for Silence\, A Spiritual Home and a Living Faith.  She is also the author of How To Live: What The Rule of St. Benedict Teaches Us About Happiness\, Meaning and Community; as well as co-author ofThe Art of Pausing; and How To Be\, the latter two books written with Brother Paul Quenon\, a monk of the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky. Judith guides frequent retreats on how to live a more contemplative life in the secular world and leads the annual “Benedictine Footprints” retreat/pilgrimage to lesser-known parts of Italy. Her newest book is The Italian Soul: How to Savor the Full Joys of Life\, about what we can learn from the Italian lifestyle about living more mindfully and joyfully.

SUMMARY:Compassionate Pause for Caregivers
DESCRIPTION:Zoom \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a gentle\, one-hour Zoom gathering created for caregivers—both professionals and those caring for family members or loved ones—who are carrying a great deal and rarely have space to simply be. This time offers a quiet invitation to step out of the demands of caregiving and into a rhythm of reflection\, rest\, and connection. Together\, we’ll share a brief grounding practice\, a contemplative reading\, and a period of silence\, followed by optional\, open-hearted sharing in a supportive and confidential space. Rooted in compassion for self and others\, this gathering honors both the gifts and the challenges of caregiving\, offering a place to reconnect with your own inner well of presence\, strength\, and care. \n\n\n\nPlease register by July 13th. \n\n\n\nAfter completing your registration\, you will receive a $0 invoice as confirmation. If you wish to make an offering\, details on how to do so will be provided at that time. \n\n\n\n*Read about our cancellation and refund policy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMark Lepper\n\n\n\nMark is the Hospitality Coordinator at Sophia Center\, ready to greet you with a smile when you arrive\, or a kind voice when you call. He also offers spiritual direction as a graduate of the Souljourners program and enjoys leading retreats as a trained Boundless Compassion facilitator. Mark is an oblate of Mount St. Scholastica\, where he is formed by the Benedictine tradition of hospitality and community life. SUMMARY:Lectio Naturae–Waking Up (a monthly series)
DESCRIPTION:Journey 1\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUsing Living In an Icon as our monthly guide\, we will learn about and put into practice lectio naturae (think of lectio divina\, but with nature rather than scripture)\, to help us in waking up and beginning the process of truly learning to see. Every day presents us many opportunities to encounter and learn more about God\, but all too often we fail to recognize them when they come our way. As Israel Baal Shem (c1698-1760) was said to have stated:  \n\n\n\n“The world is full of wonders and miracles but people take their little hands and cover their eyes and see nothing.” \n\n\n\nThe exercises in this first part of our journey encourage us to uncover our eyes\, wake up from our existential naps\, and engage with the world around us.  \n\n\n\n*For these sessions\, we will be using Living in an Icon\, which you can either purchase for yourself\, or we can order and send to you for an additional cost of $17–just make a note as you register. Subsequent session dates\, gathering the third Tuesday of each month: September 15\, October 20\, November 17\, December 15. \n\n\n\nPlease register by August 14. \n\n\n\nAfter receiving your registration\, you will receive a confirmation email from us which will include your invoice. We never want our retreat costs to be prohibitive to anyone who wants to attend our programs so we are pleased to offer scholarships. We will gather for three screenings—Billy & Molly\, Spirited Away\, and The Biggest Little Farm—each offering a distinct window into what it means to live lovingly and responsibly within our shared home: a story of unexpected companionship and mutual healing between a man and a wild otter in the Shetland Islands; an animated mythic world that explores the consequences of unchecked consumption and the recovery of wonder and identity; and a family’s journey of ecological restoration through patient\, responsive collaboration with the land. \n\n\n\nPlease register by September 8th. \n\n\n\nAfter receiving your registration\, you will receive a confirmation email from us which will be your invoice. We never want our retreat costs to be prohibitive to anyone who wants to attend our programs\, so we are pleased to offer scholarships. SUMMARY:The Enneagram and the Spiritual Journey: Becoming More Fully Who You Are
DESCRIPTION:Zoom \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat motivates you? What draws your attention? How might you inadvertently be living small (smaller than God invites you)\, even if you seem bold to some? How may what you fear\, consciously or unconsciously\, be impacting your life?  \n\n\n\nThe Enneagram\, based on ancient wisdom and accessible to people of all faiths\, offers insight into our strengths\, motivations\, defenses\, and so much more\, and provides a map of the dynamics of our psychological and spiritual growth.  \n\n\n\nTogether we will explore how the Enneagram can support our spiritual journey and open us to a more robust living of our lives. How might we experience greater freedom to be our true selves\, as God created us to be? \n\n\n\nThis series will include teaching and practices to engage with the material personally. It is appropriate for all\, including those totally new to the Enneagram and those with more Enneagram experience. \n\n\n\nPlease register by September 24. \n\n\n\nAfter receiving your registration\, you will receive a confirmation email from us which will be your invoice.
