SUMMARY:A Special Offering for Benedictine Oblates: Yearning for Life–The Timeless Wisdom of The Rule in Troubled Times
DESCRIPTION:Zoom \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn-site \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHybrid (Zoom/On-site) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOnly 2 rooms available (both require stairs and do not have handicap features in bathrooms). Please note this event is only available to Benedictine oblates and inquirers. \n\n\n\nWho of us is not affected by “the times.” Whether we are struggling with the challenges of the now\, or worried about the uncertainty of the future\, Benedict invites us to choose a path of promise. As he asks in the Prologue of his Rule\, “is there anyone here who yearns for life and desires to see good days?” \n\n\n\nA resounding “yes!” \n\n\n\nThis year’s Oblate Institute will feature Judith Valente\, writer\, international speaker and Mount oblate who will lead us on a path to find these good days.  We will travel on a journey that studies Benedict’s tools for good works\, use of the psalms and a yearning to bring good zeal into our lives. \n\n\n\nAs a hybrid experience\, there are a number of attendance options for you. \n\n\n\n\nIn person attendance with single room – $450\n\n\n\nIn person attendance with shared room – $400\n\n\n\nCommuter (presentation\, social\, and meals included\, but no room) – $300\n\n\n\nZoom – $100\n\n\n\n\nFor those attending in-person\, you also have the option to arrive a day early (add $55)\, stay a day late (add $55)\, or both (add $110). \n\n\n\nSpace is limited—please register early. \n\n\n\nAfter receiving your registration\, you will receive a confirmation email from us which will be your invoice. \n\n\n\n*Read about our cancellation and refund policy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJudith Valente\n\n\n\nJudith Valente is a journalist\, poet and the author of six spirituality titles and three poetry collections. She is an oblate of Mount St. Scholastica Monastery in Atchison\, KS\, which is the subject of her award-winning memoir\, Atchison Blue: A Search for Silence\, A Spiritual Home and a Living Faith.  She is also the author of How To Live: What The Rule of St. Benedict Teaches Us About Happiness\, Meaning and Community; as well as co-author ofThe Art of Pausing; and How To Be\, the latter two books written with Brother Paul Quenon\, a monk of the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky. Judith guides frequent retreats on how to live a more contemplative life in the secular world and leads the annual “Benedictine Footprints” retreat/pilgrimage to lesser-known parts of Italy. Her newest book is The Italian Soul: How to Savor the Full Joys of Life\, about what we can learn from the Italian lifestyle about living more mindfully and joyfully.

SUMMARY:Dreams: Our Own Personal Parables
DESCRIPTION:On-site \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJesus often spoke and taught in parables—stories filled with metaphor\, symbolism\, and hidden messages that turned usual circumstances upside down. Our dreams at night are very similar\, and while they often seem important for us to process\, we may not know how to do so. Exploring dreams through different methods and from other perspectives can be helpful as we look to make sense of the mysterious stories that God\, the Dream-Maker\, sends to help us grow in holiness and wholeness. In this retreat\, we will explore some basic dream theory and ways to work with our dreams to facilitate new insights into the meaning and messages in our dreams. Sharing during the retreat will require some openness and vulnerability\, as you are invited to submit a written dream to process with your fellow retreatants\, but you can expect the experience to be both rich and fun. We will have some prayer time with Scripture and information/handouts about dream theory\, but the majority of our time will be spent exploring our night dreams. \n\n\n\nRegistration is limited to 6. \n\n\n\nPlease register by October 23. \n\n\n\nAfter receiving your registration\, you will receive a confirmation email from us which will include your invoice. We never want our retreat costs to be prohibitive to anyone who wants to attend our programs\, so we are pleased to offer scholarships. Fill out our simple scholarship request form now! \n\n\n\n*Read about our cancellation and refund policy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBernadette Graves\n\n\n\nBernadette “Bernie” Graves has been intrigued by dreams since she was about 8 years old. She is a 2013 graduate of the Souljourners program. Bernie has been on the Souljourners staff since 2015 and offers a mini-course on dreams for the Souljourners students. She recently retired from 40 years of laboratory work as an immunohematologist.

SUMMARY:Desert Mothers
DESCRIPTION:On-site \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe next wave of spirituality after Christianity was legalized was that of the desert mothers and fathers. In the 4th century\, men and women settled in the desert and created what would be the seeds of monasticism. They attempted to model a life of contemplation apart from the world’s ways that would point toward creating the Kingdom of God in this world. There are many extant books with their sayings and aphorisms\, their biographies\, and their instructions for leading a peaceful and holy life. While few females are identified by name\, several were important enough to have their words preserved\, and their wisdom deserves to be studied and reflected upon. This retreat will introduce participants to their life stories and provide time for reflecting on their teachings and their meaning for today’s seeker. \n\n\n\n*Cost includes private room and meals \n\n\n\nPlease register by November 13. \n\n\n\nAfter receiving your registration\, you will receive a confirmation email from us which will be your invoice. She serves as an oblate director for Mount St. Scholastica and as a writer\, speaker\, and retreat director.
