Sister Wilma Baumchen, O.S.B.

Sister Wilma Baumchen, O.S.B., 85, a Benedictine of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kans., died Saturday, December 17, 2005. The vigil service will be Monday, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m. in the monastery chapel. The Mass of Resurrection will be offered there Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 10:30 a.m.
Daughter of William J. and Clara Josephine Steinmetz Baumchen, Sister Wilma was born Oct. 10, 1920, and was christened Anna Rose. She grew up in St. Marys, KS., where she attended the local elementary and high schools and taught briefly in that district before she entered the Atchison community in 1942. A graduate of Mount St. Scholastica College, she earned the Master’s in education from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebr. In her education ministry of 37 years, she was teacher and often also the principal in schools of Kansas, Iowa, Colorado, Missouri, and Nebraska.
After she retired, she served the monastery community in many ways, especially in the hospitality ministry of receptionist at Dooley Center and at The Mount Community Center during the entire time of its existence.
Her parents and her brother William predeceased her. She is survived by her brothers Joseph P., Emmett, Kans.; Daniel P., St. Marys, KS; her sister Mrs. Wilma Johnson, Oskaloosa, KS, and by her monastic community.
