Sister Nicole Engler, O.S.B., of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kansas., died Dec.6, 2002. The vigil service will be Monday, Dec. 9, at 7 pm in the monastery chapel followed by agape, and the Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated there Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 10:30 am, with burial in the monastery cemetery.
Sister Nicole was born to Andrew J. and Elizabeth Bouska Engler April 3, 1928, in Atkinson, Nebr., and baptized Natalie Marie in St. Joseph’s Church there. She entered Mount St. Scholastica Jan.23, 1948, and made monastic profession Aug.7, 1949. She received an MS in education from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebr., in 1971, and an MA in theology from St. John’s University, Collegeville, Minn. in 1978. She served in Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska in a variety of administrative and educational ministries, and directed religious education in parishes. She taught at Benedictine College and at the Adult Learning Center in Atchison. Her outreach was ecumenical, and she received appreciative recognition from the U.S. Army Correctional Brigade, Fort Riley, in 1991; from the Dept. of the Army, 1993; and theQuiet Hero award from the Chamber of Commerce in Junction City, Kans., in 1995 and 1996.
She is survived by her monastic family and by her sisters Kathleen Lynders, Bloomington, Ill.; Geraldine Hollstein, Rushville, Nebraska.; and Mary Ellen Steinman, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.; and by nieces, nephews, and cousins.
