Sister Mellita McQuaid, OSB

Sister Mellita McQuaid, O.S.B., of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kansas, died Oct. 31, 2003. The vigil service will be Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at 4:15 pm in the St. Lucy chapel, followed by agape. Mass of the Resurrection will be Monday, Nov. 3, at 10:30am in the choir chapel, with burial in the monastery cemetery.

Sister Mellita McQuaid%2C OSBSister Melitta was born to Jerome and Ida Haug McQuaid in Seneca, Kansas, and lived there until she entered Mount St. Scholastica June 2, 1929. She made her monastic profession Jan. 1, 1931, and celebrated her golden jubilee in 1981. 

For 46 years Sister Mellita taught in elementary schools staffed by the Benedictine sisters in Blaine, Flush, St. Benedict, Kenney Heights, and in her home parish of Sts. Peter and Paul, Seneca, Kansas; in Portsmouth and Des Moines, Iowa; in Walsenburg, Antonito, and Denver, Colo.; Atkinson, Omaha, and Papillion, Nebr.; and in St. Joseph (Cathedral and St. James), and Guardian Angels, Kansas City, Mo. In many places, she was also the school librarian. Since her retirement in 1978, she has served in internal ministry at the monastery.

Sister Mellita was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Oliver, Sylvester, and Ronald; by her sisters Sister Eileen, also a member of the Mount community. She is survived by her religious family, by her sisters Rita Keogh, Evelyn Landhuis, and Carmelita Koelzer, and by nieces and nephews.
