Sister Mary Jane Van Dyke, OSB, 84, died unexpectedly on October 14, 2003, at Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, Ks. A vigil service will be held in the monastery chapel at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 16. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Mount St. Scholastica on Friday, October 17, at 10:30 a.m.
Sister Mary Jane was born Mary Caroline (Connie) Van Dyke, in Atchison, Ks, on June 26, 1919, the daughter of Leo and Louise O'Brien Van Dyke. She entered the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica in 1937. Sister Mary Jane was a woman of integrity, living her monastic commitment with complete dedication and generosity. As a woman of service, she ministered with joy and enthusiasm to God's people in the classroom, in hospice work, in developing community services to connect the sisters to the people of Atchison, and as community treasurer from 1963-1970.
Preceded in death by her brothers, Barney and Eugene, she is survived by the sisters of her Benedictine family, a sister-in-law, Mary Katherine Langan of Atchison, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
