March 31, 1933 - October 11, 2003
Sister Mary Catherine (Mary Winifred) Haidusek, OSB, 70, died unexpectedly on October 11, 2003, at her residence in Kansas City, Mo. A vigil service will be held in the monastery chapel at Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, Ks. at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 14. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the monastery on Wednesday, October 15, at 10:30 a.m.
Sister Mary Catherine was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 31, 1933, the daughter of August and Mary Alice Murphy Haidusek. She entered the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica in 1957, and received the name Sister Mary Winifred. Most of her life was spent as an elementary teacher in Iowa schools at Portsmouth, Panama, and Council Bluffs, in St. Joseph, Missouri and in Monroe, Louisiana. Since 1999, she has served as a caregiver for the elderly in Kansas City.
She brought vigor and enthusiasm to her teaching, especially with junior high school students. The same compassion and joy made her a caring companion for the aged. In the manner of true Benedictine hospitality, she welcomed everyone she encountered with a warmth and interest that made them feel valued.
She is survived by the sisters of her Benedictine community and by a brother, James Haidusek, of Eugene, Mo., and a sister, Margie Steinberger of Richmond, Ks.
Memorials may be sent to Mount St. Scholastica.
Let us remember her gratefully in our prayers.
