Sister Mary Ann (Margaret Mary) Wirtz, OSB

October 2, 1924 - February 20, 2000

Sister Mary Ann (formerly known as Sister Margaret Mary) Wirtz, 75, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at Mount St. Scholastica. Mass of Christian burial was Wednesday, February 23, 2000, followed by burial in the monastic cemetery.

Mary Ann, the eighth of ten children of Anna and Michael Wirtz, was born in Kansas City, Mo., Oct. 2, 1924. She attended St. Peter's elementary school, Paseo High School, and received a baccalaureate degree from Mount St. Scholastica College in chemistry in 1946. She joined the Benedictine Sisters in 1946 and made her monastic profession in 1948.

Sister Mary Ann earned a master's degree at Kansas State University and did post-graduate studies at the University of Notre Dame; St Mary's College, Winnona, Minn.; and at South Dakota State and Oregon State Universities. She taught in schools staffed by the Benedictine Sisters in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, California, and Colorado, including Mount St. Scholastica and Donnelly Colleges. She also taught at Claflan University, Orangeburg, S.C.; and Meharry Medical School, Nashville, Tenn. She spent a year as a research assistant at Kansas University Medical School. 

After completing courses in pastoral ministry at Bethany Medical Center in 1981 Sister Mary Ann ministered as hospital chaplain at St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield, Mo., where she remained until she returned to the monastery in 1996 because of failing health. 

Sister Mary Ann is survived by three brothers, Victor and John of Kansas City, Mo., and Michael of St. Louis. She was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother.
