Sister Karen Heideman, OSB 

January 7, 1941 - June 12, 2002

Sister Karen (Gladys) Heideman, of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kans., died Wednesday, June 12, 2002. A vigil service will be Friday, June 14, at 7 pm in the monastery chapel, and Mass of the Resurrection will be there Saturday, June 15, at 10:30 am, followed by burial in the monastery cemetery. 

Sister Karen Heideman%2C OSBA difficult to diagnose illness interrupted a generous monastic life and educational career, and Sister Karen will be remembered for her joyful spirit. She was principal at Guardian Angels School, Kansas City, Mo, and at St. Pius X School, Mission, Kans., for ten years at each place. Her latest assignment was at All Saints School in Kansas City, Kans., where she initiated learning and service partnerships. She also taught at Holy Trinity School, Lenexa, Kans., and in Nebraska and Iowa. 

Born Jan. 7, 1941, in Baileyville, Kans., the daughter of Henry and Catherine Henry Heideman, Sister Karen entered Mount St. Scholastica June 25, 1959, from Corning, Kans. She made monastic profession Dec. 28, 1960. She graduated from Mount St. Scholastica College and from Creighton University with an MS in educational administration. Sister Karen was a member of the community senate and formation team, and on the board of The Mount Community Center. 

She is survived by four sisters and seven brothers: Virginia Runnebaum, Ann Gress, her twin Carolyn Osterhaus, and Robert Heideman of Seneca, Kans.; Rita Reed, and Charles and Eugene Heideman of Topeka, Kans.; Gerald, Raymond, Anthony, and Benedict Heideman of Corning, Kans.; and by nieces, nephews, and their families.
