Sister Joan Apel, OSB

April 14, 1901 - November 9, 2000

Sister Joan Apel, 99, a Benedictine Sister of Mount St. Scholastica, died Thursday, November 9, 2000, at Mount St. Scholastica. The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 11, in the Choir Chapel at Mount St. Scholastica. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Friday, November 10, in St. Lucy Chapel, with a vigil at 7 p.m. in the Choir Chapel. Burial will be in the monastic cemetery. 

Louise Catherine was the third of eight children born to John Peter and Barbara Arenz Apel, April 14, 1901, in Enid, OK. She received her grade school education in Enid and her secondary at Mount St. Scholastica Academy. Louise joined the Benedictine Sisters in 1920, and, as a novice, received the name Sister Joan. She made her monastic profession in 1922. She continued her studies and received a master's degree in education from Creighton University in Omaha, NE. 

During her long teaching career of 47 years, she taught in 21 schools staffed by the Benedictine Sisters in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and Colorado. In 1970, Sister Joan retired to the monastery and performed various tasks in internal ministry as long as her health permitted. 

Sister Joan was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother and has one surviving brother, John Peter Apel, of Enid, OK.
