Sister Irmaline Higgins, OSB 

March 17, 1912 - October 19, 2000

Sister Irmaline Higgins, 88, died Thursday, October 19, 2000, at Mount St. Scholastica. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, October 23, at 9 a.m., in the choir chapel. Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. in St. Lucy Chapel, Sunday, October 22, followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. in the choir chapel. Burial will be in the monastic cemetery. 

Loretta Patricia was born March 17, 1912, in Effingham, the seventh of ten children of Mary Teresa and Arthur John Higgins. Her elementary schooling was at St. Ann's parish school in Effingham. She joined the Benedictine Sisters in 1928 and as a novice received the name, Sister Irmaline. She made her monastic profession in 1930.

A graduate of Mount St. Scholastica Academy, Sister Irmaline received a baccalaureate degree in education from Mount St. Scholastica College in 1953. She also took graduate courses at George Peabody College, Nashville, TN; Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI; St. Scholastica College, Duluth, MN; La Verne College, La Verne, CA; and Emporia State University, Emporia. During her long career as an educator, Sister Irmaline taught middle grades in schools staffed by the Benedictine Sisters in Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, California, and Iowa. From 1965 to 1969, she was principal at the parish school in Steinauer, NE; from 1974 to 1984 full-time librarian at Holy Trinity school, Lenexa; and from 1984 to 1989, assisted in the library of Benedictine College. 

Sister Irmaline was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. She is survived by one sister, Alice Gertrude Schultz, Salinas, CA.
