Sister Elizabeth Ann Brazzel, O.S.B., a Benedictine of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kans., died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004 . The vigil service will be Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. in the monastery chapel, and the Mass of Resurrection will be Thursday, Dec. 2, at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel, followed by burial in the community cemetery.
Sister Elizabeth Ann was principal and teacher at St. Joseph high school, Shawnee, Kans., and at Bishop Lillis high school, Kansas City, Mo; at St. Mary's school in Portsmouth, Iowa, at St. Joseph's school, Beatrice, Nebr.; and Sts. Peter and Paul school, Seneca, Kansas.
Sister Elizabeth Ann was a native of Purcell, Kans., and was the eighth of ten children of Michael and Elizabeth Tuoghey Brazzel. She entered the Mount community in 1928 and was joined by two sisters (Sisters Kathleen and De Sales) and two cousins (Sisters Patrice and John Marie Brazzel). She graduated from Mount St. Scholastica Academy in 1927 and from the College in 1933 with a double major in French and Latin. She earned the MA in French from the State University of Iowa and certification in secondary school administration from Notre Dame University. Sister Elizabeth Ann traveled with her students to Canada, France, Italy, Norway, Germany, and Switzerland. She chaired the French department at Mount St. Scholastica College and at Benedictine College, and was regional vice-president of the American Association of Teachers of French. She was a member of the Board of Directors of Mount St. Scholastica Academy. Sister Elizabeth Ann helped to begin the centering prayer retreats in this area.
She is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and her Benedictine family.
