Sister Bertha Meissen, OSB
August 11, 1907 - January 31, 2003
Sister Bertha Meissen of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kansas, died January 31, 2003, at the monastery. Born August 11, 1907, and baptized Agnes, in Wien, Mo., she was the sixth of eleven children of Rose Bohrer and John Meissen. Sister Bertha entered her religious community August 10, 1925, and made monastic profession in 1926. Family members and her sisters joined her in the summer of 2001 when she celebrated her 75th anniversary.
A graduate of Mount St. Scholastica College, Sister Bertha taught elementary school from 1928 to 1978 in Kansas, Missouri and Colorado. For many years she served as a night nurse for the sisters and in many other monastery services. More recently, she was herself a resident of the community’s care facility, Dooley Center.
She is survived by her monastic family, a brother, John Miessen, of Marceline, Mo., and nieces and nephews. The vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 3, at Mount St. Scholastica chapel. Mass of Resurrection will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 4, with interment in the Mount St. Scholastica cemetery.
