Sister Cecilia Olson: Teacher to all

Sister Cecilia OlsonA Benedictine sister whose quest to learn all she could about the Rule of St. Benedict led her to study in Rome is celebrating 50 years of monastic life this month.

Sister Cecilia Olson entered the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica in 1963.

Over the years, Sister Cecilia has taught in Catholic grade schools and high schools, and most recently at Benedictine College in Atchison. She also has served as a parish liturgist. At Mount St. Scholastica, she has been the community’s liturgist and director of initial formation.

“Celebrating 50 years as a vowed member of the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica is truly a gift that has been filled with countless blessings,” said Sister Cecilia. “The unselfishness, joy and service to God’s people shown by the sisters of this community was a shining example for me in discerning my vocation in life.”

Sister Cecilia OlsonTo deepen her knowledge of the rule she has followed for 50 years, Sister Cecilia traveled to Rome to study with Sister Aquinata Bockmann, a renowned scholar of the Rule.

Sister Anne Shepard, prioress, praised Sister Cecilia’s quest to learn about monasticism and the Rule of Benedict. “She teaches by word and example the essence of Benedictine spirituality,” Sister Anne said.
