Mount St. Scholastica Volunteer Program
Located in historic Atchison Kansas, right on the Missouri River and just 45 minutes from Kansas City, Mount St. Scholastica is a monastery of 160 Benedictine Sisters engaged in service to God and the people of Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri.

The Benedictine Volunteer Program is an opportunity for women to join with the Benedictine Sisters in their monastic life of prayer, work and ministry. Established in 1863, the beautiful chapels and monastery are set in an idyllic pastoral setting, ideal for prayer and meditation.

A volunteerRequirements and Term of Service
You must be 21 or older, female, in good health, with no dependents. Otherwise, all are welcome of all religious backgrounds! Many diverse 'seekers' have found their way to The Mount from all over the nation and, after a few months to a year, (renewable for a second year), have left--forever bound to this place and the women who live and work here.

Work
The specific jobs you will do will depend on your skills and interests and the monastery's needs, but here are a few examples of typical 'duties."

  • Gardening and maintenance.
  • Picking apples, grapes or corn.
  • Painting and yard work.
  • Computer and secretarial work, library, tutoring.
  • Domestic work.
  • Elder and child care.
  • Retreat support services.
  • Hospitality for guests.

The jobs are varied and never dull and give you the opportunity to get to know the sisters with whom you work.

Benefits
The spiritual richness in the rhythm of monastic life must be experienced to be appreciated or even understood. For the creative person, for the artist, writer or poet, the pace of life here can be liberating and productive.

On a more practical level, benefits include room and board with a negotiable stipend and the experience of life in a monastic community. Enjoy educational, cultural, spiritual and recreational opportunities with the community.
