Souljourners
Ecumenical Programs for Spiritual Formation

Are You...

  • Seeking access to the nourishment of the deep wells of spiritual treasure in your tradition?
  • Do you feel called to perform the service of "holy listening" for people on the spiritual journey?
  • Are you a spiritual director / spiritual companion who would value a relationship with a support and accountability group directed by certified spiritual directors?
  • Would you like to find all of these resources available in the area of northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri at a reasonable cost?

We Offer . . .

Souljourners Group1. Professional Supervisory Program

Experienced professional supervisors will meet every other month with directors to offer supervision. The program will be offered on both a weekday and a weeknight to meet different scheduling needs.
Title: The Practicum in Spiritual Direction/Companionship
Date: Monthly 2-hour Meetings
Time: To be arranged with Supervisor
Location: To be arranged with Supervisor

2. The Program for Spiritual Directors or Companions
This three-year ecumenical program offers certification of study in the art of spiritual direction/companionship. Course work during one year focuses on the Knowledge of God and the Christian Spiritual Tradition. Course work in the other year focuses on Knowledge of Self and Graced Human Development.

Besides attendance and active participation at all sessions, requirements for Souljourners' students are as follows: assigned readings, reaction papers, and book reactions.

During the third year practicum course, participants make a three day directed retreat in the summer, meet monthly with two directees, and once a month with a supervisor. They also meet as a group once each semester at Sophia Center.

Attendance

Interested persons will be required to participate in a screening process. Throughout the program, the participants will engage in an on-going discernment process with the staff to determine if there is a real call to this ministry of spiritual direction.

This program is a three year program and is designed to be compact as well as locally accessible. It is required that certificate-seeking students attend both week-long residencies and the required 16 weekend sessions [8 sessions each of the first two years], and complete the practicum requirements. Persons who must leave sessions for pastoral or family emergencies will be expected to make up the weekend or do extra assignments by arrangement with the faculty.

Benedictine College of Atchison, Kansas, is granting through its graduate program a total of 12 graduate credits at $70.00 per credit hour for those who desire to earn graduate credits through the Souljourners Program.

Dr. Margaret Guenther, Former Director of the Center for Christian Spirituality at Dr. Margaret GuentherGeneral Theological Seminary in New York, author of Holy Listening, Toward Holy Ground, and others, is our consultant, mentor and good friend.
