The Virgin Korunskaja

Private collection in Munich, 17th century

Written by Paula Howard, OSB
Mount St. Scholastica, July 2001
The Virgin Korunskaja icon
This icon of the Virgin shows many aspects of earlier icons of "Virgin of Tenderness" with the Mother and Child in warm embrace, the elongated fingers of the Virgin cradling her Son, and His left hand clutching her veil. The prototype from which this writing was taken shows some influences of Western Art evident after the zenith of Russian iconography in the 15th century. In this version of the icon, the writer has attempted to reintroduce some of the features of the Byzantine style. A significant feature of the icon is the right hand of the Child raised in blessing, cupped in the palm of Mary"s hand.
