S. Evangeline's memorial card

“Oculi mei semper ad Dominum.”
[Latin motto she chose for herself at final profession]
“My eyes are ever on the Lord.”
Ps. 25:15

Born in Mount Hope, Kansas, Sister Evangeline Green was the oldest daughter of John and Anna Mary Ast Green. She entered the Mount community from St. Charles parish, Stratton, Colorado, in 1935, and made monastic profession in 1936. She earned the AB from Mount St. Scholastica College in 1940 with a major in mathematics and minors in instrumental music (violin) and secondary education. Sister Evangeline ministered in Colorado, where she lived her early life, and later taught math and typing in Walsenburg; and in Kansas where she served five prioresses as community or personal secretary. She taught math (especially geometry) in the Mount Academy, and played the violin in the Atchison Community orchestra. Sister Evangeline brought to life the humble monastic that St. Benedict describes in Chapter 7 of the Rule. She had a highly developed sense of confidentiality and showed great respect for each person. Unassuming and quiet, she had a delightful sense of humor. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting, and her baby sets regularly won prizes at Kansas fairs. Sister Evangeline rejoiced in the presence of her grandnephews who were her Partners in Prayer. Gentle and faithful – to prayer, to posting notices, to mail distribution, keeping track of Mass offerings, responding to the needs of others – she was always a seeker of peace. Let us remember her in grateful prayer.
