Sounds & Silence: The Magic of Music from Price Villa, 1863-2000
by Sister Joachim Holthaus, OSB

A new book from Mount St. Scholastica comes to tell the story of music from the beginnings in Atchison. It brings headline surprises about the early successes of work with talented young girls and the need for purchasing more pianos to accommodate the influx of students. It continues the story of music at the Mount through growth and development. Any past student can indulge in nostalgic memories and any other student, parent, or friend of the Mount needs to read this new book to renew acquaintance with the events of the years 1863-2000.

A beautiful color cover scene of St. Cecilia’s enhances the attractive, hard-back, 200-page volume. The narrative divides the history into decades and gives a chronological account of events, musicians, and concerts, from the Mount Academy and College, to Benedictine College and the Conservatory of Music. It is indexed, has both black and white and color photos, and appendices with lists of faculty, resumes, and students who studied in the Mount studios.
