Criteria
for Proposals for Use of the Administration Building
Established
by the Mount St. Scholastica Prioress & Monastic Council.
September 25, 2003
Whatever program(s)
housed in the Administration building at the very least ought to:
1. Support
our monastic mission and our vision for the future of the community.
For example, we will not entertain any proposal from groups that are
religiously intolerant.
2. Not require any expenditures of monastery
funds.
3. Not require any monastery personnel.
4. Have a business plan
that will determine self sufficient programming and building maintenance
for at least 30 years.
5. Serve a serious
need for Atchison, Northeast Kansas and/or Northwest Missouri.
6. Must
be a not-for-profit because of the concern that tax issues may be problematic
in the future.
The council spent a
great deal of time on this. We will not incur any more financial
liabilities for the Mount and having property on the tax rolls would
do that.
Secondly, we are a
community with a monastic identity. We do not want a shift in our
identity by having a for-profit business in the middle of our property.
7.
Contain a demolition clause if the program(s) do not succeed.
8. Not compete
with existing programs. (For example we don’t
want another retreat center on the property.)
9. Know from the outset that we are not willing to sell the building. We
are aware of other communities that have been treated underhandedly by
having one person buy the property and then give it to some one else
to use. We would very much like to have the land under the Administration
Building as part of our monastic setting that we envision for our campus
and our plan for the future.
